Thomas Leo Clancy Jr. was an American novelist best known for his technically detailed espionage and military-science thrillers, particularly the Jack Ryan series. Originally an insurance broker in Maryland with a passion for naval history, he launched his career in 1984 with the bestseller The Hunt for Red October, which gained fame after praise from President Reagan.
