Stephen Jay Gould was an American paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, historian of science, and one of the most widely read popular science authors of his generation. He is best known for co-developing the theory of punctuated equilibrium and for writing influential essays and books that brought evolution and science history to a broad audience.
