One morning the residents of Walden, Virginia, woke up to find the rest of the world gone. Just . . . gone. Surrounding their town was a wall of inky darkness, plummeting Walden into permanent night. Nothing can get in - not light, not people, not even electricity, radio, TV, internet, food, or water. And nothing can get out. No one who dared to penetrate the mysterious barrier has ever been seen again. Only their screams were heard. But for some, the darkness is not the worst of their fears. Driven mad by thirst, hunger, and perpetual night, the residents of Walden are ready to explode. The last few sane prisoners of this small town must prepare a final stand against their neighbors, themselves, and something even worse . . . something out there . . . in the darkness.

Old concept, great interpretation

This is certainly not the first story where the setting is a small town separated from the outside world but it is certainly one of the best. I truly felt the isolation here. We are given just enough information about the darkness (in the first half of the book) to understand why it is effecting the populace the way it is and the reaction of the townsfolk seems entirely believable. The story is certainly slow paced, cerebral even but never dull. You will find almost every paragraph will make you think on what his happening and guessing how the characters will respond next. And surely a sign of great writing you will probably more often than not know what is coming as the writer rarely makes a pmistep here. Each character is introduced to us and we come to understand themes o well you will indeed know how they will react to the ever changing circumstances as time passes and society breaks down. Excellent pacing, great dialog and just enough new features are added here to make a great read. From the first words we understand things are bleak and they are only going to get worse. With one possible exception (a little too much information about the darkness itself in the second half of the book) I enjoyed every aspect of this book. One of the biggest hurdles for any suspense/horror novel is how to have an ending that fits the bleakness of the story without turning readers off with just how badly it all ends. Here I felt the author had a perfect ending... We do not know how it ends.... But we really do having read all that came before it. You will not be cheery when you finish this book but you will be satisfied. Read more
