Wolff's daughter, April, a teacher in her mid-20s, rides off to the Confederate command post and demands an investigation. With the help of Major Will Chevalier and Sergeant Jacob Perlman, April finds her father's murderer but only after sorting through a formidable number of suspects and negotiating a harrowing passage through the Battle of Gettysburg. Walker deftly weaves together a difficult-to-solve crime, chunks of nicely integrated Civil War history, and a cast of well-developed characters who capture the complexities and contradictions of soldiers and civilians on both sides of the War between the States.
