Up in the air?
This clown is searching everywhere!

In Where's Pup? by Dayle Ann Dodds, illus. by Pierre Pratt, a clown's search for his pet in and around the Big Top offers a lesson in vowels via rhyming couplets. In response to the titular question, a magician responds, "Don't know./ Go ask Jo./ She's feeding Mo." Readers discover in the next spread that Mo is a monkey, and Jo doesn't know Pup's whereabouts, either. ("Can't say./ Go ask Ray./ He's washing Kay," an elephant.) A final foldout page that more than doubles the paper-over-board book in height reveals Pup at the top of a human pyramid in the center ring. Saturated golds, reds and royal blues help to evoke the magic of the circus.

PreSchool-K-A tiny bespectacled clown searches everywhere for his missing pet. Clever verses introduce various circus acts while moving the story along. For instance, "Howdy, Lee! Howdy, Dee! Where's Pup? No clue. Go ask Sue. She's riding Blue." The accompanying illustration depicts Lee lighting a match to a cannon from which Dee, a pig, is about to be shot. The next page shows a pink-costumed Sue doing a handstand on a white horse that is circling the ring. The clown finally finds his pup, poised on a chair perched atop six acrobats. The full pyramid height is achieved with a triform foldout flap. Relying on a jeweled palette of acrylic reds and oranges, the images are simple yet arresting and show the action from varying perspectives. A visually exciting charmer for storytime and one-on-one sharing.-
