FROM BOOKLIST
Orphan Clare Hamilton, last seen in Doughty's On a Clear Day [BKL D 15 01], is happy in her engagement to Andrew, her childhood friend, and about to finish college. The couple decides to move to Canada, believing that in 1957 Northern Ireland holds no promise. Andrew hates his job in law and decides he really wants to raise cattle, while Clare agrees to find work to support them. Their dreams never materialize, however, because a family death leaves Andrew in charge of the family estate, and Clare decides that she must seek her fortune elsewhere. Armed with a degree in French, she sets off for Paris, calls an old friend, and ends up with a fabulous job involving travel, good friends, and designer clothes. Her lifestyle is everything she hoped for, but somehow something is missing, and although she helps others find contentment, she has trouble finding it for herself. Doughty's lovely story about searching for satisfaction and true love is filled with heartwarming characters who will leave a smile on readers' faces. Patty Engelmann
