Galway is almost unique in the GAA, in that it's one of only three counties which realistically has a chance of doing the double in the football and hurling championships - the others being Cork and Offaly. The remaining 29 counties are stronger in one game or the other. In 2001, Galway came close in achieving the double than ever before, winning the football but failing in the hurling final to Tipperary.
