Wolfgang Knoll

Wolfgang Knoll is a physicist specializing in biophysics, surface science, optics, and materials science, with a PhD from the University of Konstanz in 1976 after a physics diploma from Karlsruhe University of Technology in 1973.[2][4] He held key positions including Director at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz from 1993 to 2008, Head of the Laboratory for Exotic Nanomaterials at RIKEN in Japan from 1991 to 1999, and since 2008, Scientific Managing Director at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology in Vienna.[1][2][3] He has received numerous honors, including election to the Academia Europaea in 2017, regular membership in the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2010, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Twente.[3][4][7]
