Alex Haley was an American writer best known for 'Roots: The Saga of an American Family' (1976), a historical novel tracing his ancestry from Africa to America, and 'The Autobiography of Malcolm X' (1965), based on interviews with the civil rights leader.[1][2] His works depicted the struggles of African Americans and significantly raised public awareness of black history and genealogy.[1][2] Haley began his writing career in the U.S. Coast Guard and received a special Pulitzer Prize for 'Roots'.[1][3]
