William S. Powell ,

William Stevens Powell (1919–2015) was an American historian, writer, academic, and teacher known as a leading authority on North Carolina history. He authored or edited more than 100 books and articles, including the six-volume "Dictionary of North Carolina Biography," and served as professor emeritus of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
