William McGucken
William McGuckin, known as Baron de Slane, was an Irish orientalist born in Belfast on 12 August 1801, who became a French national in 1838 and served as Principal Interpreter of Arabic for the French Army from 1846 until his retirement in 1872. He is renowned for publishing and translating important medieval Arabic texts. He died in Paris on 4 August 1878.
