William J. Scanlan
William J. Scanlan (1856-1898) was a composer, actor, and tenor of musical theater known in his youth as the "boy wonder" for his vocal ability. Born to Irish parents in Springfield, Massachusetts, he achieved fame as a performer and composer, creating works such as the musical show Mavourneen and the song "Over the Mountain." He died at Bloomingdale Insane Asylum in White Plains, New York, on February 18, 1898.
