William Hunter
William Hunter, son of a British soldier in the 26th Regiment of Foot, experienced the American Revolutionary War as a child, witnessing combat, being captured twice, and later documenting these events in a unique journal. After apprenticing as a printer in Britain, he immigrated to the United States, where he published a Spanish Grammar textbook, founded four newspapers including the second west of the Alleghenies, edited papers in Kentucky, wrote the first editorial opposing the Alien and Sedition Acts, and published the initial account of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He later served in the Andrew Jackson administration overseeing military pensions and traveled extensively in the Atlantic world.[1][4][6]
