William E. Cain

William E. Cain is the Mary Jewett Gaiser Professor of English at Wellesley College, where he teaches and writes on nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American literature, Shakespeare, modernism, African American literature, slavery and abolition, and literary theory and criticism. He is the author and editor of several scholarly books, including *The Crisis in Criticism* and the *Norton Anthology of Literary Theory and Criticism*, and has co-authored multiple literature and composition texts with Sylvan Barnet.
