William Cowper

William Cowper (1731–1800) was an English poet and Anglican hymnwriter who became one of the most popular poets of his time, reshaping 18th-century nature poetry by focusing on everyday life and the English countryside. He is considered a forerunner of Romantic poetry and is renowned for works such as 'The Task' and the verse 'The Diverting History of John Gilpin,' as well as coining the phrase 'Variety is the spice of life.'
