William Austin Burt
William Austin Burt (1792-1858) was an American inventor, surveyor, legislator, and millwright who made significant contributions to surveying technology and land measurement in the early United States. He is known as the 'Father of the Typewriter' for inventing the typographer in 1829, and he also invented the solar compass, a revolutionary surveying instrument that enabled accurate measurements in mineral-rich regions. Burt served as a U.S. deputy surveyor, discovered iron ore deposits in Michigan, and helped establish the boundary between Michigan and Wisconsin.
