Ward Lock & Co Ltd

Ward, Lock & Co. Ltd. was founded in 1854 by Ebenezer Ward and George Lock as a publishing firm initially based at 158 Fleet Street, London, later moving to Salisbury Square in 1878. The company underwent several name changes, becoming Ward, Lock and Bowden from 1891-1897 before settling as Ward Lock & Co. Ltd. in 1897, and it published a wide range of works including novels, atlases, educational materials, and the popular 'Red Guides' series. It split in 1964, with Ward Lock Limited eventually acquired by Cassell in 1989 and now existing as an imprint under Penguin Books.
