W. Nigel Bonner
W. Nigel Bonner was a British zoologist specializing in seals and Antarctic wildlife, initially drawn to entomology but pivoting to marine mammals after joining an expedition to South Georgia. He served as government biologist there in 1956, later becoming director of the Natural Environment Research Council's Seals Research Unit, head of the Life Sciences Division of the British Antarctic Survey from 1974 until his retirement in 1988 as deputy director, and chaired the Conservation Subcommittee of SCAR from 1974 to 1992. Bonner authored books such as 'Whales of the World' and 'Seals and Man,' establishing himself as a leading expert on cetaceans and seals.
