Victor L. Mapes

Victor L. Mapes was a United States Army Air Corps soldier who enlisted in 1939 and survived a World War II ordeal, spending three years fleeing and imprisoned by the Japanese after his unit was decimated. He was confined for two years and five months in a Japanese prison camp before escaping as one of eighty-three prisoners during transport. Mapes retired from service in 1959 and lived in Florida, later authoring the memoir 'The Butchers, the Baker.'
