Victor 1811-1894 Duruy

Jean Victor Duruy (1811-1894) was a French historian and statesman born in Paris to a factory workman, who rose through the École Normale Supérieure under historian Michelet and gained fame for his popular *Histoire des Romains* (1843-1844).[1][2][3] Appointed Minister of Education by Napoleon III in 1863, he implemented controversial reforms including secondary education for girls and expanded access for non-Catholics, later serving in academic roles until his death.[1][3] His enduring legacy includes revised multi-volume histories of Rome and France, blending scholarly depth with accessible narrative.[3][5]
