Tom Elkins

Thomas Elkins was an African-American dentist, surgeon, pharmacist, inventor, and abolitionist who lived primarily in Albany, New York during the 19th century. He is best known for his pioneering work in refrigeration technology and his significant contributions to the Underground Railroad as a member and secretary of the Albany Vigilance Committee. Elkins also served as a medical examiner for the 54th and 55th Massachusetts infantries during the Civil War.
