Sven Birkerts

Sven Birkerts is an American essayist, literary critic, and educator of Latvian ancestry, best known for his book *The Gutenberg Elegies*, which critiques the impact of electronic culture on reading.[2][9] Born in Pontiac, Michigan, to Latvian immigrant parents, he earned a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1973, worked as a bookseller, and has taught writing at institutions including Harvard, Mount Holyoke, and Bennington College, where he directs the Writing Seminars and edits AGNI.[3][4][1] His works, including *Changing the Subject* and *The MirĂ³ Worm and the Mysteries of Writing*, explore literature, memoir, and the digital age.[1][5]
