Stephen Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim was an American composer and lyricist born on March 22, 1930, in New York City, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in 20th-century musical theater for reinventing the American musical with his complex and sophisticated works.[1][2][3] He began his Broadway career writing lyrics for West Side Story (1957) and Gypsy (1959), later composing both music and lyrics for acclaimed shows like A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Sweeney Todd, and Into the Woods, earning eight Tony Awards, eight Grammys, an Academy Award, and a Pulitzer Prize.[3][5] Sondheim passed away on November 26, 2021, leaving a legacy of brilliance and artistic integrity in musical theater.[2][3][4]
