Stephen Lucas

Stephen E. Lucas is Professor Emeritus of Communication Arts and Evjue-Bascom Professor in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has taught since 1972, specializing in rhetorical criticism, social movements, and American political discourse.[1][3][5] His acclaimed first book, Portents of Rebellion: Rhetoric and Revolution in Philadelphia, 1765-1776, won the Golden Anniversary Award and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, while his recent work includes Words of a Century: The Top 100 American Speeches, 1900-1999.[3] He earned his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in 1973 and has collaborated internationally on rhetorical studies.[1]
