Stephen E Switzer
Stephen Switzer (1682–1745) was an English gardener, garden designer, and influential writer on horticulture and landscape architecture. He is credited as an early proponent of the English landscape garden style, advocating the integration of formal gardens with natural countryside elements through works like *Ichnographia Rustica* (1718, expanded 1741–42) and *The Practical Husbandman and Planter* (1733). Switzer criticized overly formal topiary and Dutch-style gardens, introducing the concept of *ferme ornée*, an ornamental farm blending utility and beauty.[2][4]
