SMART. John
John Smart (1741-1811) was an accomplished English portrait miniaturist of the late eighteenth century who trained at William Shipley's drawing academy in London from 1755. He became known for his skilled draughtsmanship, detailed brushwork, and lively colour, serving as president of the Society of Artists from 1778. In 1785, he travelled to India where he served as court miniaturist to the Nawab of Arcot before returning to London in 1795.
