Smadar Lavie

Smadar Lavie is a Mizrahi U.S.-Israeli anthropologist, author, and activist born on March 5, 1955, who specializes in the anthropology of Egypt, Israel, and Palestine with emphasis on issues of race, gender, and religion. She is a Professor Emerita of anthropology at UC Davis and has authored prize-winning ethnographies including The Poetics of Military Occupation and Wrapped in the Flag of Israel: Mizrahi Single Mothers and Bureaucratic Torture. She is a founding member of several feminist and anti-racist social movements and NGOs in Israel-Palestine and the San Francisco Bay area.
