Sir William Jones Sir
Sir William Jones (1746–1794) was an English philologist, Orientalist, jurist, and scholar of ancient India. While serving as a judge in Calcutta, he founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal and became famous for proposing that Sanskrit, Greek, and Latin shared a common linguistic source.
