Sir John Barrow

Sir John Barrow (1764-1848) was an English geographer, linguist, author, and naval administrator who served as Second Secretary to the Admiralty from 1804 to 1845, promoting major British exploration efforts including Arctic voyages and the search for the Northwest Passage.[1][2][3] Born in Ulverston, Cumbria, he traveled to China and South Africa, wrote accounts of his journeys, and co-founded the Royal Geographical Society in 1830.[1][3][5] His administrative skills contributed to the Royal Navy's success during the Napoleonic Wars.[3]
