Siegfried Engelmann
Siegfried 'Zig' Engelmann (1931-2019) was an influential educator and philosopher who pioneered Direct Instruction (DI), a highly effective teaching method designed to accelerate learning in reading, math, and other subjects, particularly for at-risk and disadvantaged children. After earning an Honors BA in Philosophy from the University of Illinois, he worked in advertising before dedicating over 50 years to developing more than 100 DI programs, challenging traditional views on cognitive development and demonstrating that intelligence and skills could be explicitly taught.
