Samuel Augustus Mitchell

Samuel Augustus Mitchell was an American geographer and map publisher born in Bristol, Connecticut in 1792. After working as a schoolteacher, he became frustrated with the inaccuracy of contemporary maps and founded a map publishing business in Philadelphia in the early 1830s, becoming the most prominent American map publisher of his generation. His son continued the family business until the copyrights were sold in the late 1880s.
