Russell L. Ackoff

Russell L. Ackoff (1919–2009) was an American organizational theorist, consultant, and pioneer in operations research, systems thinking, and management science, serving as Anheuser-Busch Professor Emeritus at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He co-authored the seminal 1957 textbook 'Introduction to Operations Research' with C. West Churchman and Leonard Arnoff, and founded the Institute for Interactive Management after retiring in 1986. Ackoff advocated for participatory planning and addressing complex 'messes' through systems thinking rather than reductionist approaches.
