Rose Tremain

Dame Rose Tremain (born Rosemary Jane Thomson) is an acclaimed English novelist and short story writer, born in London in 1943, known for her empathetic explorations of human experiences across historical and contemporary settings. She gained prominence with her debut novel Sadler's Birthday (1976) and has won numerous awards, including the Whitbread Novel of the Year for Music & Silence (1999), the Orange Prize for The Road Home (2008), and was named one of Granta's Best of Young British Novelists in 1983. Tremain served as Chancellor of the University of East Anglia, lives in Norfolk with biographer Richard Holmes, and was appointed DBE in 2020.
