Robert Meacham
Robert Meacham (1835–1902) was an African-American leader in Florida during Reconstruction, born into slavery in Quincy, Florida, as the son of his enslaver, whom he educated him and from whom he purchased his and his mother's freedom.[1][5] He helped establish the African Methodist Episcopal Church, served as a minister, contributed to Florida's 1868 Constitution, and was a state senator from 1868 to 1879, advocating for public education for Black children.[1][3][7] Retiring to Tampa in 1896 due to health issues, he died in 1902 and is remembered for his roles in education, religion, and politics.[1][3]
