Robert Carneiro
Robert L. Carneiro was an influential American anthropologist renowned for his work in South American ethnology, cultural evolution, and political evolution, particularly his circumscription theory explaining the origins of chiefdoms and states through environmental constraints and warfare.[1][2] He conducted extensive fieldwork among the Kuikuru of Brazil, Amahuaca of Peru, and Yanomamö of Venezuela, challenging views on Amazonian societies and demonstrating their capacity for population growth.[1][5] Carneiro served as Curator Emeritus at the American Museum of Natural History and adjunct professor at Columbia University, authoring numerous books and articles translated into multiple languages.[2][4]
