Richard Schwartz

Richard C. Schwartz is an American systemic family therapist, academic, and author best known as the creator of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, which he developed in the 1980s by viewing clients as composed of multiple inner 'parts' led by a core Self. He earned his Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy from Purdue University and founded the Center for Self Leadership in 2000, later renamed the IFS Institute in 2019. Schwartz has authored or co-authored over ten books on IFS, including 'No Bad Parts,' and serves as a Teaching Associate in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School affiliate Cambridge Health Alliance.
