Richard F. Pettigrew

Richard Franklin Pettigrew (1848-1926) was a pioneering lawyer, surveyor, and politician who settled in Sioux Falls, Dakota Territory, in 1869, where he practiced law, developed real estate, and helped establish key infrastructure like the railroad, newspapers, and utilities.[1][2][5] He served as Dakota Territory's delegate to Congress (1881-1883), became one of South Dakota's first U.S. Senators upon statehood in 1889, and later shifted to radical politics, opposing imperialism and writing influential books before his death in 1926.[3][4][5]
