Richard Colwell

Richard Colwell (1930-) is a prominent music educator who taught music in Sioux Falls, South Dakota schools (1953–1957), at the University of Montana, Billings (1957–1961), and served as chair of music education at the University of Illinois (1961–1989), among other positions including at the University of Northern Colorado, Boston University, and New England Conservatory.[1][2][3] He earned his BFA and MM from the University of South Dakota in 1953 and an EdD from the University of Illinois in 1961, and received prestigious awards such as a Fulbright scholarship, Guggenheim fellowship, and induction into the Music Educators Hall of Fame.[1][2] Colwell founded the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education and the Quarterly Journal of Music Teaching and Learning.[1]
