Richard Colley Wellesley
Richard Colley Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley (1760–1842), was a British statesman and colonial administrator who served as Governor-General of Bengal and Governor of Madras from 1797 to 1805, significantly expanding the British Empire in India through military victories including the Mysore War.[1][2] He later served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1821–28, 1833–34), attempting to reconcile Protestants and Roman Catholics in the divided country.[1][3] Born into the Anglo-Irish aristocracy, he began his political career in the British House of Commons before rising to prominent imperial roles.[2][4]
