Raymond Chandler

Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) was an American-British novelist and screenwriter who transformed detective fiction by moving murder mysteries from genteel settings to gritty urban landscapes. He created the iconic private detective Philip Marlowe and published seven novels during his lifetime, including The Big Sleep (1939) and The Long Goodbye (1953), while also working as a Hollywood screenwriter on films like Double Indemnity (1944).
