Philippe Contamine

Philippe Contamine (1932–2022) was a prominent French historian specializing in medieval military history and the history of the nobility. He is best known for his influential book 'War in the Middle Ages' (originally 'La guerre au Moyen Age'), which provides a comprehensive survey of warfare from the barbarian invasions to the rise of professional armies in the late fifteenth century. Contamine held various academic positions and was elected to the Academy of Europe in 1993.
