He worked in various roles including steelworker, crematorium assistant, and social worker in locations such as Sheffield, Glasgow, Brooklyn, and Leeds before becoming a full-time writer in 1995. He is best known for his police procedural novels, including the P Division series set in Glasgow and others set in York.[1][3][4][5]
