Peter Carter

Peter Carter (1929–1999) was a British author best known for his historical novels for children, which earned him prestigious awards including the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize for The Sentinels (1981), two Young Observer Prizes, and the German Preis der Leseratten. Born in Manchester as one of eight children, he left school at 14, later studied at Oxford's Wadham College earning an MA in English Literature in 1962, and taught school from 1963 to 1976 before becoming a full-time writer. His works, published by Oxford University Press, were translated into at least six languages and shortlisted for numerous prizes.
