Paul Bowles
Paul Frederic Bowles (1910–1999) was an American composer, author, translator, and poet known for his novels and short stories depicting violent events and psychological collapse among Europeans and Americans encountering traditional cultures, often with a detached elegance.[1][2] Born in New York, he published Surrealist poetry as a teenager, achieved success with his debut novel The Sheltering Sky (1949) set in North Africa, and settled in Tangier, Morocco in 1947 where he lived until his death.[1][2][3]
