Monika S. Schmid

Monika S. Schmid (born 1967) is a German linguist specializing in language attrition, particularly the change, deterioration, and stability in the native language of migrants dominant in their new environment. She earned her PhD in English Linguistics from the University of Düsseldorf in 2000 for her thesis on first language attrition among German-Jewish refugees in the UK and US. Currently Professor and Head of the Department of Language and Linguistic Science at the University of York, she was elected Fellow of the British Academy in 2022.
