Mikhail Bulgakov was a Russian and Soviet novelist, playwright, and former physician best known for his masterpiece *The Master and Margarita*, published posthumously and hailed as one of the greatest works of the 20th century. He also wrote notable works such as *The White Guard*, *The Fatal Eggs*, and *Diaboliad*, blending satire, humor, and magical realism while confronting Soviet censorship throughout his career. Widely regarded as one of the great Russian authors of the 20th century, Bulgakov died in Moscow on March 10, 1940, from nephrosclerosis.
