Michael Leunig

Michael Leunig (1945–2024) was an acclaimed Australian cartoonist, poet, and artist best known for his work in The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald over five decades. Born in East Melbourne to a working-class family, he developed a distinctive surrealistic style featuring beloved characters like Mr Curly, Vasco Pyjama, and a recurring duck, which he described as 'public prayers' exploring spiritual and emotional themes. Declared an Australian Living Treasure in 1999, his prolific career spanned six decades and produced over 23 collections of cartoons, poetry, essays, and paintings.
