Merrill J. Mattes

Merrill J. Mattes was a prominent historian and preservationist renowned for his extensive research on the westward expansion of European settlers in the United States, particularly focusing on trails like the Platte River Road. He co-founded the Oregon-California Trails Association and worked to establish Fort Laramie as a National Park Service Unit, earning the U.S. Department of the Interior Distinguished Service Award in 1959. Mattes passed away in 1996 at the age of 85 after a career dedicated to chronicling American frontier history.
