Matthew R. Rankin

Matthew Rankin is a Canadian experimental filmmaker born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, who studied history at McGill University, Université Laval, and the Institut national de l'image et du son before directing over 40 short films and two features, including The Twentieth Century (2019) and Universal Language (2024).[1][2][6] His work, often blending documentary, fiction, and animation with a focus on history and biography, has premiered at major festivals like Sundance, TIFF, Berlinale, and Cannes, earning numerous Canadian Screen Awards.[1][2][6] Now based in Montréal, he co-founded L'Atelier national du Manitoba to explore Winnipeg's cultural history through collage documentaries.[4][5]
