Mary Herring Wright

Mary Herring Wright was an African American author known for her memoir 'Sounds Like Home: Growing Up Black and Deaf in the South.' She was born in Iron Mine, North Carolina, in 1924 and became deaf at age six. Her book provides a unique perspective on the experiences of a Black Deaf woman in the early 20th century.
